Depressed Students
Dr. Basim Mohammad Ali Al- Dahadha
Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effect of a group-counseling
program based on disputing of irrational thoughts, self- assertiveness upon
depression reduction and enhancing self-concept among depressed students.
The sample of the study consist of: (30) male students and (30) female students
in the first secondary class from Irbid secondary school for boys and Safeih
Secondary School for girls in Irbid city. The subjects were selected on the bases
of their grading on Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and self-concept
scale(SCS). Then they were divided randomly into experimental group 1,
experimental group 2, and a control group 3. Each group was constituted of (20)
students, The subjects of group 1 were trained to dispute irrational thoughts,
The subjects of group 2 were trained to self-assertiveness, whereas, the subjects
of the control group 3 were not trained at all. After the termination of the
implementation period post-test and a follow-up-test was administered.
The results of the study showed significant differences among the three
groups regarding the depression level reduction and the self -concept
enhancement in the post-test and follow-up-test in favor of the experimental
groups compared with the control group. The study showed also that second
experimental group which was trained to self-assertiveness improved more
reduction in the depression level than the subjects in the first experimental
group which was trained to disputing irrational thought, on (BDI) in the posttest.
The two experimental groups showed no differences in terms of improving
self-concept in post-test and follow-up-test. Moreover, the results showed that
gender and interaction did not create influence on the level of (BDI) and (SCS)
in the post-test and follow-up-test.
The results were discussed and the recommendations were made.
Key words: Depression, Irrational Thoughts, Self - Assertiveness and
