ABSTRACT
This study tries to design and apply a group counseling program to reduce
psychological stresses among mothers of mentally retarded in Kostti town in
White Nile State-Sudan. The researchers applied the experimental method –
one group design - in carrying out this study. All mothers are selected for
the study (40) subjects. The tools of data collection consist of the following
parts: bibliographical information sheet, Psychological Stresses Scale which
has been applied before and after the application of the group counseling
program which consists of (8) sessions: The first session is for the
acquaintance between the families of retarded, the second session is for
evaluating retarded behavior, the third session is for configurating parents
for educational knowledge, the fourth session is for training parents to be
acquinted with different skills, the fifth session is for identifying family
problems, the sixth session is for training parents to be acquinted with the
skills of solving problems, the last session is for ex-post evaluation. The data
manipulated by the computer applying the Statistical Package for Social
Sciences (SPSS) using the following tests; Spearman Correlation Coefficient,
T-test and Mann-whitney test. The most important results of the study are
as follows: The group counseling program is significantly efficient in
reducing psychological stresses among mothers of mentally retarded in
Kostti twon. There is no significant difference in reduction of psychological
stresses among mothers of mentally retarded according to the retarded
gender. There is significant difference in the dimensions of emotional-
mental suffering and feelings of hopelessness among mothers of mentally
retarded according to father support. There is a negative correlation
between emotional-mental suffering and social acceptance with level of
mothers' education. Finally, some recommendations according to study
results were suggested, and references were cited at the end of the study.
