Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of a group counseling programme on the development of critical thinking practice on the students of Department of Psychology, University of Khartoum. The experimental method of two related groups was used with pre- and post-Test. A stratified random sample of )30( students was selected from the Department of Psychology who are full time students for the academic year 2012 - 2013 . The sample percentage was 6.06% of the total of 495 students. The tools of the study comprised the group counseling programme , the critical thinking test, Feedback form, fact questions form, and Raven's progressive matrices test (standardized in Sudan by Khateeb and Motwakil (2001) ) . Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse data obtained by applying: T-test, Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients, and Alpha-Cronbach. The most important results of the Study were that: there were significant differences -at the 0.05 level- between the Students of Department of Psychology, University of Khartoum on the pre- and post- critical thinking test in favor of post- test. There were no significant differences on the efficiency of the group counseling programme attributed to students’ gender (male, female) or to the place of birth and rearing (rural, urban). There was no significant correlation between the efficiency of the counseling programme and the academic level (level two, level three, level four). There was a significant positive correlation between the efficiency of the counseling programme and the students’ intelligence. The study provided a number of recommendations and proposals, the most important recommendation was applying of the Group Counseling Programme to develop critical thinking practice as an admission requirements for new students in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, University of Khartoum .
