Abstract :
The Efficacy of A counseling Program to reduce social anxiety for
secondary school students and its effect on self on self – esteem
This study aims to investigate the extent of the efficacy of a cognitive ,
behavioral counseling program in reducing social anxiety through measuring
and diagnosing social anxiety of a sampling of 11th grade secondary students
and the effect of this program on self-appreciation by way of measuring selfesteem
. the study involves designing and applying the counseling program on
the study sample and then examining the differences between the experimental
and control groups in the pre-and post-test and sequential measurements , and
exploring the efficacy of the program in reducing social anxiety and its impact
on students self –esteem .
The study problem
The problem of the study involves examining the following main question :
what is the counseling program effective in reducing social anxiety for
secondary school students and its effect on self –esteem ?
The following questions are derived from the main question :
1- Are there statistically significant differences for social anxiety between the
mean of the grades of the control group ?.
2- Are there statistically significant differences between the mean of the
grades of the control group and those of the experimental group in the pre- test
measurement ?
3- Are there statistically significant differences between the mean of the
grades of the control group and those of the experimental group in the posttest
and sequential test measurement ?
4- Is there efficacy for the counseling program in reducing social anxiety to
the study subjects ?
5- Are there statistically significant differences between the mean of the
grades of the control group in measuring self-esteem in post-test measuring ?
6- Are there statistically significant differences between the mean of the
grades of the control group and those of the experimental group in measuring
self-esteem in the pre-test measurement ?
Study sample :
The study was conducted on a sample of 24 students from khaled al – hassan
secondary school in khan younis who where divided into two equal groups : a
control group consisting of 12 students who are socially anxious , and
experimental group consisting of 12 students who are socially anxious .

Study tools :
The study tools were applied on the study sample after ensuring their validity
and reliability and these tools are :
- social anxiety scale
-self- appreciation scale
-cognitive behavioral counseling program
statistical techniques :
The researcher examined the data obtained from using statistical techniques
by using a set of statistical programs of social sciences SPSS , which include:
person assoc ion factor for internal reliability , Gutman equation,_Kronbakh
Alpha, Man Witni test ,Welkikson Test was used to assess the effectiveness of
the program in reducing social anxiety and elevating the level of self-esteem
for the study sample .
Study findings :
The findings of the study include the following:
1- There are statistically significant differences between the means of the
control groups mean and those of the experimental groups grades at the level
of social anxiety in the post-test , in favors of the experimental groups .
2- There are statistically significant differences between the grades of the
experiential groups at the level of social anxiety in the pre- and post-tests in
favor of the post-test.
3- There are no statistically significant differences between the means of the
grades of the experimental group in social anxiety in the post-test and
sequential test .
4- There is efficacy for the counseling program in reducing social anxiety for
the sample participants .
5-There are statistically significant differences between the means of the
grades of the control groups and those of the experimental group at the scale
of self-esteem in the post-test in favour of the experimental group .
6- There are statistically significant differences between the means of the
grades of the experimental group at the scale of self-esteem in the pre- and
post-tests, in favour of the post-test .
