Abstract:
This study attempts to investigate the traditional healing of psychological disorders in Sophia Centres (Maseeds) in central Sudan. The study attempts to know how Sheikh in traditional healing centres classify, diagnose, and treat psychological disorders. This can be achieved through knowing the most frequent psychological disorder in these centres, comparing the methods of diagnosis, classifications, and treatment adopted by Sheikh to those applied in modern psychotherapy centres. To achieve these objectives, the researcher applied the descriptive method, she also designed four questionnaires: the first for Sheikh, the second for psychiatrist, and the third for patients and the fourth for co-patients. The number of each group is as follows: (10) Sheikhs, (10) psychiatrists, (122) patients and (92) co-patients. The researcher applied descriptive statistics; the data presented in graphs, percentages and crosstabulation for describing the data, and also using: T-test, Anova and Manova, Welcoxon Sign Ranks test and X2 by computer, using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS), the most important results of the present study as follows: - There is a similarity of diagnosing all psychological disorders, depending on the knowledge of the Sheikh about signs and symptoms and the causes of these disorders - There is a relation between the treatment of disorders with the spiritual believes about these disorders, in addition to social status of the Sheikh, and the persuasion of the patients and co-patients of this spiritual treatment - There are many assisting factors in the process of treatment in the Sophia centres and this resemble to some extent what is happening in modern psychiatric cenres such: cognitive therapy, counseling and rehabilitation treatment - The Sheikh of Sophia centres (Masseds) have got their own classification of psychological disorders based on symptoms and signs in addition to dominant social believe. - There is statistically significant difference in times of follow-up, duration of residence and times of visits to both traditional healing cenres (Maseeds) and to hospital in favor of traditional centres (Maseeds). - There is statistically significant difference in he period of healing according to the type of disorder both in integrated and traditional therapy. Also there is a significant interaction between type of disorder with the type of response to duration of healing in both traditional and integrated therapy - The psychological disorders taken to the modern psychiatric clinics in most are specially those do not respond to traditional method treatment and need medical care in all phases - The Sophia Sheikh has got the interest to cooperate with modern centres, and the same interest also found among psychiatrist to cooperate. - The co-patients prefer to take their relatives to Maseeds because of various reasons including the social perspective towards mentally ill and their belief in Sheikh’s spiritual greases.
